We’re onto the second product announcement of the day, this time from Samsung with the launch of the Galaxy S7 range.

The unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge was huge.  It played out to a full auditorium and they even got to see parts of the presentation via VR headsets from under their chairs.  Mark Zuckerberg also made an appearance on stage to promote the VR headset partnership they have with the mobile giant.  Samsung is keen to build on the success of the S6 range of phones from last year.  At a glance, you can hardly tell the difference between last year models and the new models until you look a little closer.

Both of the phones are very similar with only a couple of differences.  The Galaxy S7 has a 5.1 inch screen and also has a curved back like they gave the Galaxy Note 5 last year and they added this to give it a more comfortable feel in the hand.  The Galaxy S7 Edge has a 5.5 inch screen and has the Edge display but it has a bit of a curved back also.  The S7 has a 3000mAh battery and the larger S7 Edge has a 3600mAh battery.

Both devices have received a bump up in specs.  The new Exynos CPU is 30% faster, they have 4GB RAM, 32GB on-board storage, finger print sensor, fast charging and fast wireless charging and a crystal clear Super AMOLED QuadHD display.  They also run the latest version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

So what’s new with the S7 line up?  Samsung haven’t disappointed and have added a few very nice features.  New features for this year include water and dust resistance.  The phones can go 30 minutes being under water at a depth of 1.5 metres.  In the past, there used to be caps or covers protecting USB ports from the elements but Samsung have found a way to seal off the inside of the phone while keeping the USB port and headphone jack completely open.  A big thumbs up for that!

Always on display new to the S7 range

They also have a new camera on-board, this time it’s a 12MP camera with OIS.  Now this isn’t as big as last years 16MP camera but what Samsung have done is increased the aperture to an impressive F1.7 and it features a dual pixel sensor which will excel in very low light situations.  There was a comparison between night time pictures taken at the same time on both the S7 and an Apple iPhone 6S Plus and the S7 blew it out of the water with better colours and higher level of detail.  They also have a 5MP camera upfront and they too have the F1.7 aperture.

Another welcome feature which wasn’t available in last years models is expandable storage.  You can now put a MicroSD card up to 2TB into the phone via the dual SIM card/MicroSD card slot.

The S7 Edge also has improved Edge software which now lets you access more apps and information by swiping in as usual.  It is also worth noting that both phones also have an always on display so that you can see your calendar, time and any notifications at a glance.

I was impressed with last year’s models and they have done well to keep the same good looks and make it more comfortable by introducing the curved back.  It looks like Samsung could be onto a winner with these handsets.  They will be available in the UK from 11th March 2016 and pre-orders are live from tomorrow and if you pre-order, you’ll get a Samsung VR headset thrown in for free, that’s a pretty sweet deal.  Will you be pre-ordering?
