Although the Mobile World Congress exhibition hasn’t officially started yet, it hasn’t stopped manufacturers announcing their devices and as we expected today, LG showcased their latest flagship smartphone along with a whole load of accessories.
In terms of design, the LG G5 has a newly designed aluminium uni-body, but it doesn’t stop there. LG has brought us something new and innovative this year, a modular smartphone. This means that the extra hardware features can easily be added to the phone. This works by allowing the bottom of the phone to slide out and replacement modules can be added.
There are two modules available at launch. There is the LG CAM Plus that is designed to give you a better grip while taking pictures and has a dedicated shutter button, video button and digital zoom dial. It also comes with a larger 4000mAh battery to give you more juice while you are out taking pictures. The LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O Play boosts the audio capability. It has high quality DAC and amp that is tuned by B&O, has 32Bit up-sampling and HD Audio playback. The modules also hold the battery which is also replaceable.
This phone also has not one, but two cameras on the back. One is a 16MP sensor which has a standard 78 degree angle lens and other one is an 8MP sensor which has a 135 degree wide angle lens. This will enable better landscape shots and capture group shots without you having to move further away to get everything in shot.
It also has an always on display which allows you to see your notifications, time and date at a glance.
This handset should also be very quick as it has the latest Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB RAM onboard along with 32GB of storage which can also be expanded via a MicroSD card to a whopping 2TB.
For those that like to see all the key specs, it has:
- Chipset: Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 820 Processor
- Display: 5.3-inch Quad HD IPS Quantum Display (2560 x 1440 / 554ppi)

LG also announced some other accessories to compliment the LG G5. The highlights include the LG 360 CAM, which does exactly what it says on the tin. It comes with two 13MP 200 degree wide angle cameras and can create 2K video with 5.1 surround sound. The LG 360 VR headset connects to the LG G5 via a cable and simulates a 130 inch TV at two metres away and is compatible with 360 degree images and video captured on the LG 360 CAM as well as Google Cardboard content. LG also want you to have your own roving home monitoring solution. The LG Rolling Bot can be used to keep an eye on your home.
All this and Mobile World Conference hasn’t even started yet! LG have brought us a great phone which should be a strong challenger for the other flagship phones we’ll be hearing about over the next few days and I’m sure there will be much more tech innovation to see.
